Chemical Coproduct
Industrial pulping effluent generated during the kraft process combines spent cooking chemicals with the organic residue extracted from wood chips inside a pressurized digester. This aqueous byproduct, termed black liquor, holds dissolved hemicellulose, fragmented polymers and inorganic salts such as sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate, and active sulfur compounds. In an unbleached virgin containerboard mill, its composition governs both plant energy self-sufficiency and chemical recovery efficiency.
The liquid departs the digestion stage at a concentration near fifteen percent dry solids before multiple-effect evaporation trains raise that density above sixty-five percent. Chemical characterization terminates where the concentrated fluid enters the recovery furnace, because atomization and combustion transform the stream into molten smelt and high-pressure steam rather than a process intermediate for finished paperboard.
Energy Generation
Furnace combustion exploits the high calorific value of degraded lignin fragments to drive plant turbines and reduce oxidized sulfur species back to active sulfide. Inorganic salts collect at the hearth as a molten bed, draining into dissolving tanks to regenerate green liquor, which recausticizing operations convert into fresh white liquor. Incomplete combustion or improper solids concentration suppresses reduction efficiency, increasing dead-load chemicals and consuming extraneous fossil fuel.
Viscosity rises exponentially as solids content increases, demanding precise temperature control in transfer piping to prevent solid precipitation and line plugging.
Furnace Limitation
Digester output and total paperboard volume remain bound to recovery boiler capacity, since a mill cannot cook more wood than its evaporation and burning stages can recycle. Boiler metallurgy imposes fixed operating ceilings on steam temperatures, restricting recovery boiler throughput compared to pure power boilers. When liquor processing capacity falls below pulping demand, pulp production must drop, regardless of paper machine speeds or market order backlogs.
Chemical balances in the recovery cycle also set the limit on total sulfur loss, dictating the makeup requirement for virgin saltcake across the board mill.
