Certifying Body
Certification marks awarded by European testing organizations verify that packaging materials can break down completely and safely in residential composting heaps. Earning the DIN-Geprüft Home Compostable logo proves that a flexible film or paperboard has passed rigorous tests for biodegradation, disintegration, and ecotoxicity under home compost conditions. This certification is managed by DIN CERTCO and provides consumers with independent assurance that the packaging will leave no harmful residues in their garden soil.
It represents a higher standard than industrial compostability due to the lower and less controlled temperatures of domestic heaps.
Performance Evaluation
Testing protocols require the packaging material to degrade at ambient temperatures within a specified timeframe. For the DIN-Geprüft Home Compostable mark, the sample must show at least ninety percent biodegradation within twelve months at temperatures between twenty and thirty degrees Celsius. It must also disintegrate so that less than ten percent of the original mass remains on a two-millimeter sieve after six months.
This prevents larger fragments from lingering in the finished compost.
Commercial Benefit
Packaging manufacturers apply this certification to their specialty retail bags, coffee pouches, and food wraps. Achieving this standard allows brands to make credible, verifiable eco-claims on their product packaging. It helps retailers meet strict European waste regulations.
