Surface Dimension
Lateral measurement of the top of an ink carrying pocket on a printing cylinder defines the area available for fluid pickup. The gravure cell opening represents the distance between the walls of the engraved cavity at the surface of the roll. It determines the physical size of the dot transferred to the substrate.
This dimension changes based on the screen count and the desired ink volume.
Screen Resolution
Higher line counts reduce the available space for each individual gravure cell opening to maintain the structural integrity of the copper walls. A narrow opening limits the amount of ink that can enter the cell during the immersion phase.
Print Quality
Clean edges on text and fine lines depend on the precision of the gravure cell opening across the entire width of the cylinder. If the opening is inconsistent, the resulting print shows visible banding or variation in optical density. Modern laser engraving allows for precise control over the shape of the opening to improve ink release.
Wear from the doctor blade gradually reduces the depth of the cell while the gravure cell opening may widen slightly over time. This change requires the operator to adjust the ink viscosity to compensate for the altered volume.
