Pricing Mechanism
Contractual mechanisms that transfer raw material cost fluctuations directly from paperboard converters to packaging buyers maintain margin stability during volatile commodity cycles. Pass through allocation defines the commercial method of indexing containerboard, folding boxboard, or energy price movements to formal packaging unit pricing. Supply agreements define specific calculation schedules that reference independent market pricing indices, adjusting unit invoice rates at monthly or quarterly review periods.
This commercial structure isolates converter manufacturing value-add from swings in virgin pulp, recovered fiber, natural gas, and chemical feedstock markets. The framework establishes transparency between procurement teams and paper converters during extended multi-year packaging supply arrangements.
Calculation Framework
Commercial agreements establish baseline index values for specific paperboard grades, such as kraftliner or white lined chipboard, using regional market publications. When the reference index shifts by an agreed threshold amount, the pass through allocation formula calculates an adjusted packaging price based on the weight of board contained in each stock unit. The calculation incorporates structural scrap factors generated during blank die cutting, typically accounting for an additional ten to fifteen percent over the net carton weight.
Fixed converter expenses, including direct labor, tooling depreciation, warehouse storage, and administrative overhead, remain excluded from the variable adjustment formula. Freight costs can be linked to diesel fuel indexes or maintained as fixed transportation line items.
Contractual Boundary
Clear definitions of grade definitions and geographic index zones prevent pricing disputes between contracting parties. The pass through allocation model stops functioning equitably when converting operations substitute alternative substrate grammages or alternative fiber furnishes without adjusting baseline consumption models. If a mill shifts from virgin kraftliner to recycled testliner, index referencing must adjust to match the newly adopted substrate category.
Contractual clauses specify trigger bands to avoid frequent administrative recalculations for minor index fluctuations below agreed percentages. Pass through allocation remains a standard commercial framework for high-volume corrugated packaging and folding carton supply contracts.
