Regulatory Rating
Classification categories established by European packaging regulations assess how effectively packaging materials can be collected, sorted, and recycled at scale. The ppwr recyclability performance grade ranks packaging products from high to low based on their recycled yield, processing efficiency, and the quality of the secondary materials produced. This rating ensures that packaging placed on the market complies with strict environmental benchmarks.
Higher grades correspond to materials that integrate into existing recycling systems.
Grading Criteria
Evaluations are based on quantitative laboratory metrics that measure how a package behaves during industrial fiber recovery operations. In this context, the ppwr recyclability performance grade is determined by looking at the fiber yield, the macro-reject fraction, and the presence of stickies. Packaging with an excellent rating must have a yield above a specific threshold and must not contain adhesives that contaminate the papermaking machinery.
On the other hand, products that contain heavy coatings or non-soluble components will receive a lower rating. This structured classification encourages companies to redesign their packaging to maximize the use of easily recyclable materials.
Market Access
Lower-rated packages face higher environmental levies and restricted market access under European Union rules. This grading system ensures that the true cost of disposal is factored into the design phase of the product.
