Mechanical Displacement
Mechanical pre-conditioning applied to carton crease lines during folding-gluer processing prepares carton blanks for frictionless opening on high-speed automated packing lines. The prebreak angle defines the angular extent to which carton scorelines are folded and opened before final seam gluing and flat packing. Folder-gluers utilize overhead swords, rotating belts, and curved guide bars to bend the first and third crease lines outward, typically through an arc of ninety to one hundred and eighty degrees.
After this folding displacement, the scoring line is returned to a flat or partially relaxed position before the second and fourth creases receive adhesive and close the carton tube.
Internal Fracture
Scoring rules initially crush internal paperboard plies, but fibers retain elastic springback resistance until they undergo complete mechanical displacement. Achieving a proper prebreak angle permanently breaks remaining fiber bonds within the score channel, reducing the force required to erect the carton blank downstream. Without thorough pre-breaking, carton blanks remain stiff along major hinge axes, resisting vacuum cup opening mechanisms on cartoning lines.
High-density board grades, including solid bleached sulfate and thick coated kraft sheets, require higher pre-break displacement to release elastic hinge tension. The resulting mechanical softening allows cartons to erect square without twisting or jamming within machine lug chains.
Converting Setting
Folder-gluer operators adjust machine carrier rails and folding belts to verify that blanks attain target angular displacement without twisting or scuffing delicate exterior print surfaces. When carton blanks exhibit inconsistent prebreak angle values across an operating run, high-speed cartoning machines suffer from misfeeds, incomplete carton erection, and side panel bulging. Excessive mechanical pre-breaking can weaken carton score integrity, leading to panel misalignment during glue seam adhesion.
Maintaining precise pre-break settings ensures reliable packaging line performance for pharmaceutical, food, and consumer goods packaging.
