Identification Marker
Physical labels attached to the core or the outer wrap of a paper reel provide essential data for identification and processing. Standard roll tags contain information such as the manufacturer name, the grade of the paper, the reel width, and the total weight. This marker identifies the primary reference for the press operator when loading the substrate.
Roll tags ensure that the correct material is used for the specific print job.
Technical Specification
Barcodes or radio frequency identification chips embedded in the label allow for automated data capture during the unloading and storage process. On the surface of the roll tags, printed details typically include the machine direction, the felt side, the wire side, and the moisture content at the time of manufacture. These specifications assist in the adjustment of the tension and ink settings on the printing press.
Precise tracking of these details reduces the risk of material mismatch.
Inventory Control
Removal of the label usually occurs only when the reel is about to be mounted on the unwind stand. If the roll tags are missing or illegible, the material must be quarantined until the properties can be verified through laboratory testing. This protocol prevents the accidental use of incorrect stock.
