Web Stabilization
Precision pneumatic devices that utilize high-velocity air streams to stabilize moving webs are essential components in continuous paper production lines. Positioned on a paper machine, scanning frame air knives deliver a uniform layer of pressurized air that keeps the fast-moving paper sheet at a constant distance from online measuring sensors. This pneumatic stabilization prevents the sheet from fluttering or vibrating as it passes through the sensor gap.
By maintaining a flat and stable web, these devices allow thickness and moisture sensors to gather highly accurate data without contacting the delicate, wet paper.
Dust Prevention
High-velocity air streams also act as a protective barrier to prevent paper dust and loose fibres from settling on the optical lenses of the scanning sensors. In the hot and humid environment of a paper machine dry end, airborne debris accumulates rapidly on exposed surfaces. By continuously sweeping the sensor path, the air knives reduce the need for manual cleaning cycles.
This automated maintenance prevents sensor drift, ensuring that the control system receives continuous, reliable data throughout the production run.
Pressure Balance
Operating these devices requires a delicate balance of air pressure to avoid damaging the moving sheet. Too much pressure can deform the wet paper web, creating defects in the final product. Conversely, insufficient pressure fails to stabilize the web or clear the dust.
