Spatial Alignment
Precise positioning of the glued joint along the vertical edge of a carton ensures the structural and cosmetic integrity of the finished package. This operational metric, known as side seam registration, is critical during the high-speed folding and gluing of carton blanks. Accurate seam alignment prevents panels from being skewed, which would make the carton difficult to fill or stack.
Precision Gluing
Control of the blank feeding mechanism and glue application nozzle prevents the side seam from shifting out of tolerance. Poor side seam registration can lead to adhesive squeeze-out, where glue migrates to the inside or outside of the carton, causing adjacent packages to stick together in the packing case. Modern folding-gluers use optical sensors to monitor the alignment of the blank edges as they pass through the compression section.
Adjusting the belt speed and folder hooks ensures that the trailing and leading edges of the blank meet precisely, keeping the seam perfectly straight.
Forming Efficiency
Downstream filling lines rely on perfectly squared cartons to prevent jams in the product insertion station. If side seam registration is off by more than a fraction of a millimetre, the carton can assume a rhomboid shape instead of a rectangle. This skewing causes automated packers to stop, reducing overall packaging line efficiency.
