Methodological Framework
Standardized European laboratory procedures established by the Confederation of European Paper Industries evaluate the repulpability and recyclability of paper and board packaging materials. The harmonized testing methodology assesses how efficiently fibrous structures disintegrate under standard hydropulper conditions without generating excessive coarse reject fractions or adhesive agglomerates. Within this framework, cepi test protocol sets quantitative thresholds for fiber yield, visual flake content, sheet formation acceptability, and adhesive stickies accumulation.
The procedure distinguishes between standard recycling streams and specialized deinking or barrier-removal processing lines. It applies to printed sheets, multi-layer laminated boards, and dispersion-coated substrates destined for industrial papermaking recovery. The testing regime terminates its assessment at the laboratory sheet-forming stage and does not evaluate commercial waste collection logistics or consumer sorting behaviors.
Disintegration Assessment
Disintegration begins with standardized mechanical pulping at specific water temperatures, chemical consistencies, and agitation energy levels. Samples processed under the cepi test protocol must achieve a minimum fibre yield, typically exceeding eighty-five percent of dry input mass after screening. Mechanical screens with fine slots separate unpulped flakes, plastic laminates, and functional coatings from recovered cellulose fibers.
Visual analysis of laboratory-formed hand sheets measures remaining surface imperfections, wax specks, and adhesive macro-stickies. High flake percentages indicate insufficient defibering, which causes runnability failures on commercial paper machine forming wires. Micro-stickies are quantified through thermal extraction and deposit testing.
The methodology evaluates how barrier dispersions break down, flagging fine synthetic particles that escape screening and contaminate white water loops.
Mill Integration
Sourcing departments require pulpability test reports before introducing novel barrier-coated cartons into circular converting streams. Splicing tapes, heat-seal coatings, and cold-seal adhesives must qualify under cepi test protocol to ensure that converted packaging enters municipal fibre recovery without incurring contamination penalties. Mills operating secondary fibre plants use these laboratory classifications to adjust pulper dwell times and reject disposal protocols.
Certified recyclability ratings allow packaging developers to optimize water-based barrier formulations while preserving standard repulping capabilities.
