Liquor Circulation
Mechanical and fluid dynamics parameters govern the flow of black liquor through the extraction screens of a continuous digester. Optimizing extraction screen hydraulics prevents fiber clogs and maintains uniform liquor distribution during the pulping process. This control is critical for extracting dissolved lignin and spent chemicals without disrupting the downward movement of the wood chip column.
Flow Stability
Digester operators adjust the extraction pressure and flow rate to avoid pinning the chips against the screen face. Pinning occurs when the radial liquor velocity exceeds the terminal velocity of the chips, which blocks the screen openings and halts the process. Modern designs utilize stepped screen plates or automated back-flush cycles to disrupt this buildup before it stops the flow.
Yield Preservation
Uniform liquor extraction helps to stabilize the temperature and chemical concentration profiles across the cooking zone. This stability prevents localized over-cooking, which degrades fiber strength and reduces the overall yield of the pulp. By maintaining stable flow patterns, the mill ensures that the fibers retain their structural integrity for paper making.
This optimization also protects the chemical recovery process from excessive wash-water dilution that would increase the steam demand in the evaporator train. Efficient hydraulics thus support both fiber quality and thermal energy conservation across the plant.
