Technical Limit
Technical specification limit defines the acceptable range of water weight relative to the total weight of a paper or board shipment. Moisture content tolerance ensures that the material arrives in a state that is compatible with the printing and converting equipment. Standard ranges usually fall between six and nine percent for most industrial grades.
Mill Control
Mill operators use online sensors to measure the water levels across the entire width of the paper machine. Deviations outside the agreed range can cause the sheet to curl, cockle, warp or develop wavy edges. These physical defects make it impossible to feed the paper through high-speed offset or flexographic presses.
Precise moisture control also affects the weight of the material, which has direct implications for the cost of the shipment.
Converting Requirement
Converters must maintain a stable environment in their storage areas to keep the stock within these limits. If the board becomes too dry, it loses its flexibility and the scores will crack during folding. If it becomes too wet, the starch adhesive in the corrugator may not set correctly, leading to poor bond strength.
Clear communication of these tolerances in the purchase contract prevents disputes over quality and performance. Equilibrium moisture content depends on the relative humidity of the local climate.
