Statistical Measure
Quantitative manufacturing metrics compare the inherent natural variability of an industrial production process to the engineering specification limits established for that product. Designated within statistical quality control, process capability assesses whether a manufacturing system running in a state of statistical control can consistently generate output meeting defined dimensional and performance criteria. The mathematical indices, commonly expressed as Cp and Cpk, evaluate the spread of the process distribution relative to the upper and lower specification limits while accounting for any off-centre process shift.
The statistical evaluation applies to measurable continuous variables across paper converting, coating applications and package forming operations, terminating where discrete attribute evaluations begin.
Mathematical Evaluation
Calculating basic capability requires establishing the natural process spread, defined mathematically as six times the standard deviation derived from stable, in-control production runs. The potential capability index Cp divides the total allowable specification band by this six-sigma process variation. The actual capability index Cpk incorporates the process mean by calculating the distance from the mean to the nearest specification limit divided by three standard deviations.
A Cpk value of one indicates that the process mean and distribution spread place output directly at the edge of the specification boundary, yielding an expected non-conformance rate of twenty-seven hundred parts per million. Values of one point three three or higher indicate robust statistical containment, confirming that virtually all production falls comfortably within required operational tolerances.
Procurement Application
Packaging buyers enforce capability requirements on critical substrate parameters such as grammage, caliper, internal bond strength and coefficient of friction. Converting lines running high-speed packaging equipment demand high capability metrics on carton dimensions to prevent mechanical feeder jams. A papermaking line showing poor capability on moisture content forces converters to continually recalibrate printing press tensions and folder-gluer setups to prevent misregistration.
Sourcing contracts often establish a minimum Cpk threshold of one point three three as a mandatory qualification standard for commercial paperboard supply. Process capability indices provide the primary mathematical verification that a packaging supplier can reliably deliver substrates matching contracted engineering specifications over extended production campaigns.
