Optical Ratio
Electromagnetic propagation velocity differences between air and a condensed medium establish the fundamental value that quantifies light refraction within materials. Calculating the refractive index dictates the opacity, gloss, transparency and scattering power of packaging films, mineral coatings and printing varnishes. Standard refractometers determine this dimensionless constant by measuring the critical angle of total internal reflection using monochromatic sodium D-line light at twenty degrees Celsius.
The measurement parameter loses relevance when substrates completely block, absorb or scatter incident light beams before internal refraction boundaries can be established.
Coating Opacity
Papermaking pigments achieve optical hiding power through refractive disparities between inorganic minerals and synthetic polymer binders. Anatase and rutile titanium dioxide provide exceptionally high values that scatter light efficiently, allowing thin barrier coatings to mask unbleached brown kraft pulp completely. Calcium carbonate and kaolin clay exhibit lower numbers closer to that of dried starch and cellulose, yielding lower opacity but superior ink-holdout gloss.
Matching the refractive qualities of an overprint varnish to the underlying plastic film eliminates interfacial haze, maximizing printed graphic depth on clear pouches.
Spectroscopic Coupling
Internal reflection spectroscopy techniques rely directly on substrate refractive properties to govern evanescent wave depth into barrier layers. Optical crystals must maintain a higher index than the examined polymer film to preserve internal reflection conditions during infrared testing. Diamond, zinc selenide and germanium crystal optics dictate unique sampling depths according to the target substrate ratio.
Variations in polymer density, biaxial orientation and crystalline phase alter the local optical constant, causing minor band distortions during automated spectral library searches. Precision optical matching directly governs the visual hiding power of coated paper packaging.
