Surface Friction
Elastomeric coating modifiers applied to packaging substrates reduce surface kinetic energy to produce a signature matte velvet tactile response. Soft-touch tpu behaves as a high-density polyurethane film deposited during the finishing stage to alter the coefficient of friction on paper or paperboard. Chemical bonds within the polymer chain determine the mechanical durability of the layer during conversion.
This material layer remains distinct from thin aqueous varnishes because the internal polymer structure holds a specific modulus of elasticity that resists scratching. Manufacturers apply the suspension through gravure or flexographic print stations where wet film weight defines the final grip level. Precision in metering the application weight prevents blocking on the rewind stand or during pallet storage.
Production Boundary
Application of soft-touch tpu requires absolute control over the thermal curing tunnel parameters to ensure complete cross-linking of the reactive groups. If the temperature drops below the defined threshold, the film remains tacky and attracts dust during the folder gluer phase. Excess heat causes yellowing of the substrate or unintended hardening of the polymer which destroys the desired tactile quality.
Converters test the bond strength using standardized tape pull protocols to confirm the anchor between the polyurethane and the underlying clay coating. Failure to maintain constant viscosity in the fountain leads to variations in the dry film thickness which disrupts the uniformity of the matte effect across a long print run. Correct alignment of the drying sequence prevents the coating from shifting during high-speed delivery.
Operational Trade-off
High degrees of friction reduction often decrease the adhesion capacity of subsequent hot foil stamping or cold glue operations performed on the packing line. Solvent-based or water-based adhesives find little purchase on the low-energy surface unless the printer isolates the glue area through a registered knock-out pattern. This requirement adds complexity to the plate preparation stage and demands tight registration between the finishing coating unit and the glue application head.
Careful management of the surface energy levels allows the material to perform as a protective shield while enabling functional post-processing. Proper formulation of soft-touch tpu creates a durable barrier that preserves print integrity while yielding a consistent hand feel across production batches.
