Yield adjustment
Subtraction of the weight of edge trim generated during the slitting of paper rolls from the total billable weight ensures that converters pay only for the usable width. The calculation of trim scrap deduction prevents disputes over raw material waste by setting a clear credit for returned trim. It applies to custom-width paperboard orders where the master roll is wider than the specified order width.
Weight calculation
This adjustment is based on the difference between the gross weight of the master roll and the net weight of the delivered slit rolls. The trim scrap deduction is calculated by multiplying the known trim width by the total linear meters run. This weight is then subtracted from the invoice to reflect the actual paper delivered to the printing press.
It ensures that the converter is not billed for material that was never processed or was sent straight to the pulper.
Cost control
Applying this deduction helps packaging converters maintain accurate material cost calculations for their production runs. It does not apply when the customer specifically orders master rolls and performs the slitting in-house. This accounting process maintains a fair distribution of waste costs between the mill and the converter.
