Certification Framework
Independent third party testing programs evaluate complete packaging constructions to verify full biodegradation under ambient home composting temperature conditions. Obtaining TÜV OK Compost HOME certification establishes that packaging materials disintegrate biologically without leaving toxic residues or microplastics in lower temperature environments. This mark distinguishes home compostable packaging from products requiring industrial composting facilities.
Testing Requirement
Certification under TÜV OK Compost HOME confirms that paperboard packages and barrier coatings disintegrate within ambient soil and garden compost heaps. Testing protocols mandate minimum ninety percent biodegradation into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass within twelve months at temperatures between twenty and thirty degrees Celsius. Physical disintegration testing requires that ninety percent of material mass passes through a two millimeter sieve within six months.
Heavy metal limits, fluorine content restrictions, and plant ecotoxicity testing ensure that finished compost remains suitable for agricultural soil application. Packaging converters must test complete finished items, including inks, adhesives, and functional coatings, to earn certification.
Certification Limit
Environmental compliance under home composting standards stops at biological disintegration without verifying industrial recycling repulpability. Certification guidelines evaluate biological breakdown without evaluating fiber recovery rates in conventional paper mill pulpers. Items certified under home composting protocols cannot automatically enter kerbside paper recycling streams without separate repulpability testing.
Certification applies exclusively to material fate within organic waste treatment systems.
