Synthetic Polymeric Dispersion
Aqueous colloidal dispersions of polymethyl methacrylate or related acrylic copolymers form clean protective barriers and binding coats across packaging paperboards. Converting operations coat high-grade folding boxboard and linerboard with waterborne acrylic to yield transparent scuff resistance, water repellence, and heat-sealable functional properties. The liquid formulation contains dispersed synthetic resin polymers, coalescing aids, and defoamers held within an aqueous continuous phase.
Evaporation of the water carrier drives polymer particles into close contact, triggering polymer chain interdiffusion into a coherent, non-tacky film. The resulting surface eliminates the need for extruded polyethylene films on specialized packaging runs.
Coating Runnability And Adhesion
High shear stability permits application on blade, rod, and air-knife coating machines running at high commercial line speeds. A dried film of waterborne acrylic provides clear gloss retention, fold flexibility without cracking along scorelines, and good ink receptivity for subsequent flexographic or gravure print steps. Oil and grease resistance is exceptional, protecting folding cartons from fatty food absorption.
Heat-sealing applications demand controlled glass transition temperatures, ensuring the layer activates under heated sealing jaws while avoiding package blocking inside stored reels.
Recycling Repulpability Boundary
Dispersed polymer matrices fragment into discrete particles during conventional hydropulper alkaline re-slushing, floating away during standard flotation and screening steps. High coating weights or excessive cross-linking formulations resist fibre separation, producing fine residual specks on finished recycled paper sheets.
