Recycled Substrate
Multi-ply cartonboard manufactured from recycled paper fibres with a coated, white top layer is widely used for folding cartons in the consumer goods sector. This material is white lined chip, which consists of a grey interior made from mixed recycled paper and a white outer ply. This grade is typically used for dry food boxes.
Surface Finish
The bleached top layer of this board receives a clay coating to ensure high-quality graphic reproduction during printing. Because white lined chip has a rough and absorbent recycled core, the top white layer must be thick enough to prevent the grey color from showing through the surface. This coating provides a smooth finish that accepts offset or flexographic inks with high fidelity.
Improving the surface smoothness makes the board suitable for retail displays where high visual impact is required.
Structural Application
Converting this board requires attention to its stiffness and crease recovery properties, which are lower than those of virgin fibre grades. The white lined chip relies on the multi-ply structure to maintain its rigidity, but the recycled fibres are shorter and yield less bending resistance than chemical pulp. It is therefore used in applications that do not require high compression strength or deep draw forming.
This selection allows brands to use recycled materials without compromising the appearance of their retail packaging.
