Permissible Deviation
Allowable manufacturing variation defines the range within which the actual weight of produced paperboard may deviate from the ordered nominal target before triggering a commercial penalty. In commercial supply contracts, basis weight drift tolerance establishes the boundary for acceptable fluctuation during a machine run, ensuring that neither the yield of the converter nor the runnability of the high-speed press is compromised. If the mass of the delivered substrate shifts beyond these margins, the buyer often faces feed errors or structural failures in the finished packaging.
Standard agreements limit this deviation to a small percentage of the nominal weight to maintain uniform caliper and stiffness.
Production Variance
Paper mills balance headbox slurry consistency and wet-end drainage to control the physical properties of each roll. While automated scanning frames measure the sheet continuously, minute changes in machine speed or furnish composition introduce drift over time. Mills use advanced control loops to adjust slurry flow, yet a minor drift remains unavoidable across thousands of linear metres.
If the basis weight drift tolerance is too tight, the paper machine must run at lower speeds, which increases manufacturing costs without providing any practical benefit to the packaging converter. Industrial converting equipment is engineered to handle small fluctuations, so the tolerance is set to align with the processing limits of modern folding carton gluers. When these limits are respected, the sheet passes through high-speed presses without jamming or tearing that would otherwise halt a production run.
Stable operation protects the yield of both the mill and the printer.
Contractual Boundary
Commercial agreements typically establish a tier of penalties or rejection rights when the sheet weight moves outside the agreed boundaries. When the produced roll falls below the lower limit, the resulting loss in structural rigidity can cause boxes to collapse under stacking loads. Conversely, exceeding the upper limit reduces the total surface area delivered per tonne, which disrupts the yield calculations of the converter.
The basis weight drift tolerance ensures that both financial risk and technical performance remain predictable throughout the life of the contract. This protection helps stabilize packaging operations.
