Cooling Component
Heat removal from molten polymer during extrusion coating is achieved by passing the web over a rotating cylindrical heat exchanger. The chill roll extracts heat from the thermoplastic web as it leaves the die to solidify the material and lock in specific structural properties. Its function ends once the web reaches a temperature suitable for winding or further downstream converting.
Thermal Exchange
Internal circulation of water or specialized fluids maintains a precise surface temperature across the entire width of the metal cylinder. Heat moves from the molten polymer into the roll shell through direct contact, a process that requires high thermal conductivity and uniform flow patterns. Careful adjustment of the rotation speed allows the operator to control the contact time.
Advanced designs utilize a double-shell construction or spiral baffles to ensure that the cooling medium reaches every part of the surface equally, preventing hot spots that could cause localized thinning of the coating.
Surface Finish
Chrome plating or specialized engraving determines the final texture and optical properties of the solidified film. When the cooling rate is too slow, crystal growth in polymers like polyethylene can increase haze or alter the barrier performance. A highly polished surface creates a gloss finish while a matte roll produces a duller appearance.
