Reaction Uniformity
Hydraulic pressure and mechanical agitation drive the movement of wood chips through the vessel to ensure contact with white liquor. Continuous digester mixing creates the conditions for consistent delignification by preventing the formation of stagnant zones where wood fibres might receive uneven chemical treatment. Localized temperature variations drop when the flow patterns facilitate heat transfer throughout the column.
Homogeneous chemical distribution across the cross section allows the process to maintain the target Kappa number without frequent adjustments to the feedstock speed or the chemical charge. Optimal operation prevents the occurrence of fibre degradation in overcooked regions and rejects from undercooked areas.
Distribution Mechanism
Vertical flow control manages the descent of wood chips against the countercurrent flow of cooking chemicals. Internal scrapers or rotating distributors displace the solid phase to avoid the development of preferential flow channels that bypass the active reaction zones. A radial gradient in chemical concentration disappears when the machinery forces mass transfer between the liquid phase and the interior of the wood chips.
Proper adjustment of the rotational speed keeps the retention time stable across the diameter of the vessel. Variations in the slurry consistency across the radius lead to uneven cooking if the agitation force remains too low to overcome the friction of the dense chip bed.
Operational Tolerance
Printing grades require uniform fibre strength to ensure that the sheet surface remains stable during high speed web transport. Fluctuations in the cooking environment at the pulping stage cause variations in the tear index and tensile strength of the finished paper. Precise control of the movement within the digester reduces the frequency of breaks on the paper machine by keeping the degree of polymerization of cellulose chains within a narrow range.
Consistent mixing minimizes the amount of residual lignin that interferes with subsequent bleaching steps and surface sizing performance. Uniformity in the raw material quality enables manufacturers to meet the strict demands of converting equipment without slowing down the production lines.
