Account Balance
Certified volume accounts in chain of custody forestry standards maintain a running tally of eligible wood fibre inputs against finished product sales. Under this mechanism, a credit system balance represents the accumulated volume of certified material that a paper mill or packaging converter is permitted to claim on outgoing shipments. This tally fluctuates as certified wood pulp enters the mill and is converted into paper board.
It ensures that the total quantity of labelled paper sold never exceeds the physical volume of certified fibre that entered the manufacturing process.
Conversion Factor
Yield calculations translate raw pulp tonnage into finished board weight before the balance updates. For example, if a mill processes pulp with an eighty percent yield, it scales the credits to prevent over allocation of claims on finished packaging.
Credit Expiry
Acquired credits have a limited shelf life and must be redeemed within a designated timeframe, typically twelve months from the date of pulp receipt. Any unused credits on the ledger automatically lapse after this period, reducing the credit system balance to prevent long term hoarding or artificial inflation of certified claims. This time boundary forces papermakers to align their certified purchasing directly with their annual production cycles.
It establishes a secure framework that maintains the integrity of environmental labels on consumer packaging.
