Surface Protection
A specialised protective coating designed to repel water and moisture-based fluids protects printed paperboard packaging from physical degradation and structural collapse. Application of a hydrophobic varnish during the printing process ensures that moisture from condensation or wet hands does not penetrate the cellulose matrix. This barrier layer is essential for chilled food cartons and beverage containers that encounter damp environments.
Moisture Barrier
The liquid resistance provided by the dried coating prevents the loss of carton stiffness during storage and transit. Liquid water on unprotected paperboard weakens the hydrogen bonds between cellulose fibres, leading to bulging and collapse of the packaging. The formulated coating contains waxes or specialised polymers that form a low-energy surface that causes water droplets to bead and roll off.
This physical shielding extends the shelf life of the packed goods by keeping the outer container dry and structurally sound under fluctuating storage conditions.
Ink Adhesion
Applying a repellent layer requires careful timing to ensure that it does not disrupt the drying of the primary graphics. The coating must bind firmly to the underlying ink film while remaining highly resistant to water. Incorrect formulations can lead to flaking, poor rub resistance or problems during subsequent gluing and sealing stages on the packaging line.
