Structural Deviation
Dimensional stability in paper stock describes the movement of a cellulose web when internal equilibrium shifts due to environmental humidity changes. Machine direction moisture expansion measures how much a substrate grows along the length of the fibres while the material absorbs or releases atmospheric water. The degree of elongation depends upon the arrangement of individual fibres during the wet end formation phase on the paper machine.
Proper alignment of these fibres minimizes the variance in paper length when the relative humidity of the storage facility shifts. Mills monitor this behaviour to prevent print registration errors during high speed lithography. Presses require stable sheets to ensure that colour separation plates align accurately across thousands of impressions.
When the substrate shifts unexpectedly in the press, the dots move out of position. This leads to blurred images or misaligned traps on the final packaging.
Material Mechanism
Cellulose fibres possess a hollow core that takes on water readily in high humidity. Water enters the wall of the fibre, forcing the structure to swell in diameter. This lateral growth pushes adjacent fibres apart, which results in the lengthening of the entire sheet in the grain direction.
Manufacturers control this growth by applying tension during the drying cycle. Heavy restraint prevents the sheet from expanding while the water evaporates. This creates a state of internal tension that counters potential movement later.
Paper with high moisture sensitivity risks curling when the tension releases unevenly. Converters manage these outcomes by storing substrates in controlled environments before processing. Stable humidity levels ensure that the fibres remain in a constant state of hydration.
Processing Limit
Tolerances for expansion vary by the printing technology utilized for the job. Offset printing requires lower expansion rates than digital toner applications where heat exposure dries the paper rapidly. Printers test the stock under standard conditions to verify that movement stays inside the required threshold for registration.
Each batch of paper carries specific performance metrics regarding hygro-expansion values. High quality packaging demands minimal movement to maintain the integrity of complex graphic designs across long runs. Sheet stability allows for precise cutting and folding operations without tearing.
Accurate control of this property ensures consistent throughput for automated lines.
