Mechanical Load
Industrial press sections apply localized compressive force to moving webs of paper to extract water or bond multiple plies together. Controlling nip roller pressure ensures that the paperboard achieves uniform density across its entire width without crushing the delicate fiber structure. This force is typically generated by hydraulic cylinders acting on the journals of opposing rollers.
Incorrect settings can cause localized thickness variations and moisture streaks in the finished reel. Maintaining the correct pressure also prevents the sheet from sticking to the dryer cans in subsequent sections.
Material Compression
Elastomeric roll covers deform under high loads to create a flat contact zone called the nip width. When adjusting nip roller pressure, operators must account for this deformation because it determines the dwell time during which the paper sheet is compressed. Excess pressure accelerates cover wear and can lead to thermal failure of the rubber material.
This interaction must be carefully balanced to prevent web breaks while maintaining the target dewatering rate or coating transfer efficiency.
Measurement Technique
Direct evaluation of the contact area utilizes tactile sensor films or electronic pressure transducers positioned between the rolls. These diagnostic tools record the actual distribution of nip roller pressure across the face of the cylinder to identify alignment errors and roller deflection. Regular profile audits prevent uneven wear on the roll covers and guarantee consistent board caliper.
