Resin Chemistry
Synthetic oligomers and reactive acrylate monomers polymerize rapidly under ultraviolet or electron beam radiation. Formulations using radcure acrylic polymers dominate high-gloss overprint coatings and fast-curing packaging inks applied to folding boxboard and corrugated microflute packaging. Free-radical photoinitiators absorb specific ultraviolet wavelengths, generating free radicals that initiate instant crosslinking of acrylated epoxy, polyester, polyether, or polyurethane resins.
Coating Performance
Rapid curing speeds permit immediate inline die-cutting, creasing, folding, and gluing on high-speed packaging converting lines. Formulated radcure acrylic coatings exhibit exceptional scuff resistance, high gloss, rub resistance, and chemical resistance compared to traditional water-based or solvent-based varnishes. High ink viscosity and fast cure response prevent dot gain on coated paperboard surfaces, yielding crisp print resolution and vibrant color density.
However, incomplete radiation curing leaves unreacted low-molecular-weight acrylate monomers that migrate through paperboard, causing odor issues or contamination in food packaging applications. Electron beam curing systems eliminate photoinitiators entirely, providing safer coating options for sensitive primary packaging applications.
Surface Durability
Instant polymer network formation provides immediate mechanical protection for printed board surfaces during transit. Scratch-resistant surface finishes maintain brand appearance on retail packaging shelves. Applying a radcure acrylic coating delivers high gloss and surface protection on premium folding cartons.
