Mass Exclusion
Known weight of an empty container, pallet, crate, or vehicle is subtracted from the total weight to determine the mass of the goods inside. In the paper industry, the tare weight includes the weight of the wooden pallet, the protective wrap, the core, and the strapping. This figure ensures that the customer is only billed for the actual weight of the substrate.
It is a fundamental measurement for both logistics and trade.
Net Calculation
Determination of this value occurs before the loading process begins or by using standardized weights for known packaging components. When calculating the final shipment, the tare weight is recorded on the weighbridge ticket or the delivery note to provide a transparent record of the calculation. This process prevents the inclusion of non-product mass in the inventory records.
Reliable weighing equipment is calibrated regularly to maintain the accuracy of these figures.
Shipping Accuracy
Miscalculation of the empty container weight leads to errors in the billing of freight costs and the management of stock levels. If the tare weight is underestimated, the reported net weight will be higher than the actual product received. This discrepancy causes issues during the reconciliation of raw material consumption.
