Chemical Adhesive
Reactive bonding agent formulated from a mixture of polyol and isocyanate resins provides high-performance adhesion in flexible packaging laminations. This two component polyurethane delivers excellent resistance to heat and chemicals, making it suitable for food packaging that undergoes sterilization. It creates a tough, flexible film that bonds well to both plastic films and paperboard.
Curing Process
Mixing the two parts initiates a chemical cross-linking reaction that must be carefully controlled to achieve optimal bond strength. Because the two component polyurethane has a limited pot life, converters must apply the mixture within a specific timeframe before it becomes too viscous. The curing rate depends on temperature and moisture, requiring controlled warehouse conditions for the laminated rolls to cure fully.
Lamination Performance
Finished laminates produced with this adhesive resist delamination during demanding downstream processes like pasteurization. High bond strength ensures that the layers do not separate when the packaging is subjected to heat or physical stress. Packaging manufacturers use this adhesive when dry-bond laminating high-barrier films for liquid or greasy products.
By selecting the correct ratio of the components, converters can tailor the flexibility and hardness of the cured adhesive layer to match the stiffness of the paperboard.
