Polymeric Binder
Chemical binding agent used in aqueous and solvent-based coating formulations for packaging substrates. This synthetic polymer, often applied as a topcoat or formulated into printing inks, provides a durable and transparent barrier when dried. When dry, acrylic resin seals the surface of the paperboard, which limits the absorption of moisture and oils during subsequent processing steps.
Formulation Performance
Viscosity control and drying speed represent the two main parameters that dictate the selection of specific polymer grades for high-speed gravure or flexographic printing presses. In water-based varnishes, acrylic resin is neutralized with volatile amines to maintain solubility during the run, but these amines evaporate after deposition to render the dried coating insoluble in water. The balance between hard and soft monomer units determines both the flexibility of the film and its heat-seal resistance on automated packing lines.
High-temperature filling lines demand a resin with a high glass transition temperature to prevent blocking or sticking.
Substrate Adhesion
Direct bonding to non-porous surfaces like metal foils and plastic laminates occurs through specific polar groups on the polymer backbone. In these applications, acrylic resin ensures the ink layer does not peel or flake when the package is folded or subjected to freezing temperatures. This binding action remains effective across diverse cartonboard grades.
