Localized Atmospheric State
Small-scale environmental zones occurring at the immediate interface of a solid surface and the surrounding air define the specific humidity and temperature gradients of a material. Variations in boundary layer microclimates determine how efficiently water vapor moves from a damp paper web into the drying hood. High velocity air knives disrupt these zones to prevent saturation.
Moisture Transfer
Air velocity and surface roughness control the thickness of the stagnant layer where diffusion governs the movement of molecules. In corrugated board production, boundary layer microclimates inside the fluting determine the rate at which heat penetrates the linerboard to set the adhesive. Laminar flow allows heat to linger whereas turbulent air removes energy.
Moisture accumulates when air movement stalls. Stagnant air pockets occur most frequently in the center of a wide web where the air remains stationary for longer durations than at the edges. The resulting variation across the machine direction leads to uneven moisture profiles and potential warping of the finished sheets.
Storage Impact
Equilibrium moisture content varies when palletized goods encounter stagnant air in deep storage. Even though the warehouse maintains a set humidity, boundary layer microclimates trapped between tightly packed boxes can lead to mold growth or structural softening. Consistent ventilation prevents these localized extremes from exceeding the safe limits of the board.
