Cutter Relief
Precision embossing and creasing tools require exact dimensional clearance to fold heavy folding boxboard without fracturing the outer liner. Counter die geometry establishes the precise depth and wall angle of the female channel milled into phenolic or steel plates below the printing press bed. Mechanical forces applied during rotary or flatbed conversion press the substrate into this recessed groove, displacing fibers to create a hinge point.
Proper sizing prevents the board from splitting during high speed folding carton production.
Channel Depth
Material caliper dictates the physical dimensions of the recessed matrix that receives the corresponding steel rule blade. Board stiffness rises exponentially with grammage, demanding wider channels to accommodate thicker plies without crushing the internal fluting of corrugated grades. Press operators calculate this clearance by adding twice the caliper of the paperboard to the thickness of the cutting rule.
Undersized grooves generate excessive pressure, shearing the backing sheet before a clean crease forms.
Clearance Angle
Sloping sidewalls on the matrix channel guide displaced material smoothly during the final closing stroke of the platen press. Steeper angles concentrate bending stress over a narrower band, which suits lightweight cosmetic packaging made from solid bleached board. Shallower wall slopes distribute compression more broadly across recycled chipboard grades, preventing delamination of multi layer substrates.
Tool wear alters these profiles over long production runs, requiring periodic replacement to maintain folding carton squareness on automatic filling lines.
