Equilibrium Differential
Environmental divergence between substrate moisture equilibrium and ambient air conditions dictates the speed of hygroexpansive movement in cellulose webs. The calculation of delta relative humidity quantifies this gradient by subtracting the ambient relative humidity of the processing room from the equilibrium relative humidity of the paper or paperboard stack. Sword hygrometers and digital probe sensors measure the interior microclimate of the skid, comparing that reading against calibrated room hygrometers.
The metric identifies moisture displacement potential before outer packaging is removed. It applies strictly to the boundary layer between the material and the surrounding atmosphere, terminating its scope where chemical moisture content alone is considered.
Dimensional Reaction
Vapour pressure gradients drive rapid moisture transfer across unprotected sheet perimeters whenever environmental equilibrium is broken. A positive delta relative humidity indicates that the paper stack is wetter than the surrounding hall, forcing moisture out through the edges and causing sheet contraction along sheet perimeters. A negative differential forces atmospheric water into the exposed perimeter fibres, expanding the cross-machine dimension while the dense stack centre remains locked.
These moisture exchanges induce out-of-plane distortions such as edge wave or tight center doming, which impair feeder performance. The rate of dimensional change accelerates under elevated temperature conditions, as warm air holds higher volumes of water vapour. Converting facilities maintain strict climate setpoints to prevent rapid moisture uptake during multi-stage printing operations.
Conditioning Protocol
Pressroom acclimatisation protocols eliminate internal sheet distortion by bringing pallet cores into equilibrium with processing environments before wrapper removal. Stacks with large delta relative humidity values require extended storage inside moisture-barrier wraps until core temperatures and equilibrium humidity match room conditions. Converted cartons cut from unconditioned stock undergo post-die-cutting warp, resulting in carton distortion inside automated packaging lines.
