Geometric Taper
Tooling geometry angles define the sidewall inclination of an embossing die relative to the press stroke direction. The female cavity draft angle provides the required clearance slope for embossed paperboard fibers to enter and exit cavity recesses without dragging. This parameter governs surface scuffing and wall verticality on embossed packaging cartons.
It stops applying to flat, non-embossed foil stamping tools that lack recessed cavity walls.
Sheet Release
Vertical die walls scrape against raised paperboard features during tool withdrawal, causing surface scuffing and sheet tearing. Machining an appropriate female cavity draft angle allows the embossed substrate to disengage smoothly from the die cavity upon press opening. Deep relief embossing requires steeper draft angles to facilitate sheet release without distorting raised detail shoulders.
Proper wall tapering reduces mechanical friction, extending tool lifespan and preventing paperboard dust accumulation inside cavity recesses. Incorporating calculated wall angles preserves crisp foil shine along vertical embossing borders.
Angle Limit
Excessively steep wall angles reduce the structural depth definition of the finished embossing impression. Setting the female cavity draft angle too wide flattens relief profiles, turning sharp detail edges into sloped ramps. Compromised detail geometry reduces visual contrast and tactile impact on finished paperboard packaging.
