Measurement Standard
Standardized chemical mixtures formulated to determine the wetting tension of polymer films provide consistent quality control. Using ISO 8296 dyne fluid involves applying a series of liquid mixtures with progressive surface tension values to the substrate surface. The behavior of the liquid film is observed to identify the mixture that remains continuous for exactly two seconds.
This specific value represents the wetting tension of the polymer, indicating its suitability for printing and lamination.
Chemical Formulation
Mixtures of formamide and ethyl cellosolve are blended in specific proportions to achieve precise surface tension values. These liquids span a range from 30 to 56 millinewtons per meter, allowing the characterization of different treatment levels. The operator applies the liquid using a clean brush or cotton swab, observing whether the wet line ruptures or remains intact.
This test is highly sensitive to the temperature and humidity of the testing environment.
Process Calibration
Regular testing of the liquids is required to prevent incorrect surface energy readings due to contamination or evaporation. Open bottles can lose volatile components, altering the surface tension of the mixture. Storing the test liquids in tightly sealed containers and replacing them regularly ensures reliable and reproducible measurements on the production floor.
