Adhesion Testing
Standard test methods that measure the force required to separate bonded materials evaluate the quality of laminated films. The application of peel strength ISO 8510 2 involves a 180 degree peel test using a tensile testing machine to pull apart the laminated layers at a constant speed. This measurement quantifies the adhesive bond strength, ensuring it meets the requirements for flexible packaging applications.
The test results help determine whether the adhesive has cured correctly and bonded the substrates securely.
Test Procedure
Rectangular strips of the laminated material are prepared and mounted in the tensile tester grips. One layer is clamped in the upper grip while the other is secured in the lower grip, and the machine separates them at a speed of 100 millimeters per minute. The force required to peel the layers is recorded continuously, and the average force per unit width is calculated.
This quantitative value provides a clear measure of the lamination quality.
Lamination Quality
Low peel strength values indicate insufficient adhesive application or poor surface treatment of the films. This deficiency can lead to package failure during filling, shipping, or storage. Regular testing ensures that the lamination process remains stable and consistent across different production runs.
