Technical Standard
Numerical ratios defined in chain of custody standards quantify the material loss occurring between raw input procurement and finished product output. Within the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification framework, PEFC ST 2002 conversion factors establish the ratio between raw timber or paperboard input weight and the resulting output weight of certified finished packaging. These factors allow accurate credit calculations across complex converting operations.
Mathematical Application
Conversion factors account for moisture loss, trimming waste, matrix offcuts, and chemical processing extraction during packaging manufacturing. A converting plant using a conversion factor of 1.25 requires 1.25 tonnes of certified raw paperboard input to generate 1.0 tonne of certified finished carton credits. If a plant processes 500 tonnes of certified board with an established factor of 1.20, the system credits 416.67 tonnes of finished packaging stock into the certified ledger.
Accurate factor selection requires empirical measurement of process scrap during representative production runs rather than estimated nominal values. Process changes or equipment upgrades necessitate factor re-validation to maintain system accuracy.
Compliance Rule
Incorrect conversion factors lead to improper credit generation and potential certification suspension. Certification bodies audit factor calculations against historical scrap records during annual surveillance checks. Discrepancies between documented conversion ratios and actual factory waste levels trigger mandatory factor adjustments.
