Definitional Composition
Raw material compositions specify the exact types and proportions of fibres and chemicals used to make a particular grade of paper. The physical furnish determines the structural strength, opacity and surface texture of the final sheet. It is carefully balanced by mill engineers to meet the performance requirements of the intended application.
Component Varieties
This mixture typically includes a combination of long softwood fibres for strength and short hardwood fibres for smoothness. The physical furnish also contains fillers like clay or calcium carbonate to improve the brightness and printability of the board.
Manufacturing Control
Adjusting the ratio of virgin fibre to recycled content allows the mill to manage costs while maintaining the technical standards. Since the physical furnish is the foundation of the paper machine’s operation, any variation in the input can lead to changes in drainage and drying. For example, a higher proportion of recycled fibre might increase the amount of fine particles, which slows down the production speed.
Accurate control of the furnish ensures that the paper meets the rigid specifications for stiffness and folding endurance required by packaging converters. It is the primary tool for tailoring the substrate to the needs of the printing press.
