Bond Evaluation
Selective mechanical separation tests evaluate the bond strength between corrugated medium flutes and linerboard facings under direct tension. Packaging laboratories perform pin adhesion TAPPI T 821 to measure the force required to pull flute tips away from facing liners. Specially designed comb fixtures insert polished steel pins between adjacent corrugated flutes.
A compression testing machine applies vertical load until the adhesive joint or paper fiber matrix fails. High adhesion force prevents box delamination during high-humidity storage and transport handling.
Loading Protocol
Testing fixtures separate selective liner bonds by supporting alternate flutes with stationary pins while movable pins push against the target facing. Standard pin diameters match specific flute profiles to prevent localized tearing or crushing before adhesive bond failure occurs. Under pin adhesion TAPPI T 821 specifications, test specimens undergo conditioning at twenty-three degrees Celsius and fifty percent relative humidity prior to testing.
Peak force values divided by total contact line length yield normalized bond resistance figures expressed in kilonewtons per meter.
Failure Mechanism
Low values indicate starch gelatinization failure, improper heat transfer across corrugating rolls or inadequate adhesive application rates. Fiber tear along the adhesive line confirms that paper strength limits overall structural integrity rather than glue line performance.
