Fluid Application
Offset lithographic dampening configurations drive the metering roller in the opposite rotational direction of the transfer roller. Fluid shear inside the reverse dampening nip generates a thin, uniform water film on the lithographic printing plate without erratic misting or water droplet spitting. Stable moisture control prevents ink emulsification on dense solid board jobs.
Fountain Dynamics
The metering roll moves against the direction of the water pan roll, using mechanical boundary layer shear to shave excess solution from the roller surface. This counter-rotational dynamic eliminates hydraulic pressure build-up at the nip, producing an ultra-thin liquid film that transfers smoothly to the hydrophilic plate regions. By altering the speed differential between the counter-rotating rollers, the press console modulates moisture delivery instantaneously without changing fluid viscosity or alcohol substitute concentrations.
Precise film metering prevents water accumulation along plate margins and eliminates ink feedback into the dampening pan.
Print Quality
High-end packaging graphics requiring heavy solid ink coverage demand precise moisture boundaries to prevent dry picking and water trailing defects. Excess water weakens the surface sizing of cartonboard plies, leading to liner blister and poor ink trap during multi-color wet-on-wet printing. The mechanical stability of counter-directional dampening systems provides consistent dot reproduction across heavy board production runs.
