Chemical Pulping
This category designates wood cellulose fibres extracted from coniferous species through an alkaline digestion process involving sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphide. Softwood kraft fibre provides the primary structural component in paper grades where tensile strength and tear resistance take precedence over smoothness or opacity. The extraction removes lignin from the cell wall while preserving the integrity of the long tracheids characteristic of pines, firs or spruces.
This pulp production stops at the pulp mill stage, where the slurry undergoes washing and bleaching to reach the required brightness for converting. The fibres form the foundation for packaging materials that withstand physical stress during transport and handling.
Structural Tensile
Engineers rely on these long fibres to create paper architectures with high burst and fold endurance. Softwood kraft contributes length to the substrate matrix, which improves the anchorage of shorter hardwood or recycled fibres within the web. Converters calibrate their machinery to handle the increased stiffness that results from higher concentrations of this material.
The mechanical properties of the sheet depend upon the degree of refining applied at the paper machine, which increases the bonding surface area of the individual strands. Heavy duty corrugated boxes and industrial multi-wall sacks require a minimum volume of this pulp to maintain integrity during automated filling cycles.
Origin Certification
A distinction exists between the raw material source and the specific processing method applied to the wood mass. Chain of custody protocols track the coniferous logs from managed forest stands to the digester, ensuring that the supply chain meets environmental standards for fibre harvest. Process certification confirms that the facility maintains the chemical recovery cycle necessary to contain reagents within the mill circuit.
This standardisation prevents the discharge of untreated effluent while maximising the yield of usable cellulose per tonne of biomass. Softwood kraft fibre represents a commodity standard where performance metrics dictate the market price of the finished pulp roll.
