Clamping Force
Mechanical systems used to secure tooling to a press bed rely on the leverage of pivoting arms. The toggle lockup mechanics consist of a series of small, adjustable clamps that fit into the holes of a honeycomb platen. When the operator tightens the screw, the arms of the toggle expand and exert a massive lateral force against the edge of the die.
This force is enough to keep heavy brass dies from shifting even under the repeated shock of a high speed press.
Mechanical Advantage
Design of the toggle allows a small amount of manual torque to be converted into thousands of pounds of holding pressure. This is achieved through the geometry of the linkage, which locks into a rigid position as it reaches the end of its travel. Because the system is purely mechanical, it does not require hydraulic or pneumatic power to maintain its grip.
The simplicity of the design makes it highly reliable in the harsh environment of a finishing department.
Precision Positioning
Micro adjustments are possible by turning the individual screws on each toggle. This allows the die to be moved in increments of less than a tenth of a millimeter, which is essential for registering the emboss to the printed image. Once the position is set, the toggle lockup mechanics ensure it remains there for the duration of the job.
It is the global standard for high quality foil and embossing work.
