Protective Topcoating
Liquid polymer emulsions applied inline over fresh lithographic or flexographic inks protect underlying print graphics from mechanical scuffing and moisture exposure. Applying water-borne overprint varnish seals porous substrate surfaces while providing tailored gloss, matte, or friction properties to folding boxboard. These water-based formulations dry rapidly through hot air convection, eliminating ink rub-off and blocking during high-speed packaging conversion.
Evaporative Film Formation
Formulations consist primarily of acrylic resin emulsions, solution-soluble resins, water, and coalescing solvents, combined with wax additives. When water-borne overprint varnish lands on printed paperboard, infrared dryers and warm air knives evaporate water and volatile solvents, forcing acrylic polymer particles to coalesce into a continuous protective film. Synthetic wax particles migrate to the film surface during drying, lowering static friction and enhancing scuff resistance during carton folding and box filling.
The clear acrylic film prevents ink transfer to packaging machinery while shielding organic ink pigments from physical rub and environmental humidity. Proper viscosity control between twenty and forty seconds in a DIN four cup ensures uniform varnish transfer without foaming in the coating unit.
Application Boundary
Excessive varnish coat weights slow water evaporation, leading to moisture entrapment and corrugated board warping. Inadequate drying temperatures cause incomplete resin coalescence, reducing wet rub resistance and film durability.
