Protective Layer
Liquid polymer formulations of this type are applied over printed paperboard to provide gloss and protection characteristics. The waterbased acrylic coating utilizes a dispersion of acrylic resins in water that dries by evaporation to form a clear protective film. This coating prevents ink rub off during packaging and protects the printed graphics from moisture and abrasion.
Film Formation
Application involves depositing a thin liquid layer onto the printed sheet using an overprint varnish unit or anilox roller on the press. As the water evaporates, the acrylic polymer particles coalesce to form a continuous and durable film. This process occurs rapidly under infrared dryers or hot air knives to allow for immediate stacking and finishing.
The coating is formulated with waxes and surfactants to adjust the slip and gloss level of the finished surface.
Application Range
Consistent control of coating viscosity and dry weight is necessary to ensure uniform protection and prevent cracking during folding. This product does not apply to non absorbent substrates like films and foils where water evaporation is inhibited. The coating must be compatible with the underlying inks to prevent color bleeding and adhesion issues.
Proper cleaning of the coating unit is required to prevent dried acrylic from buildup on the rollers.
