Coating Physics
Mineral application creates a non-porous layer on folding boxboard substrates to seal cellulose pores against grease and moisture migration. Barrier coated boxboard combines virgin mechanical pulp cores with functional surface chemistry to replace plastic films in rigid food packaging lines. Mill calendars smooth the raw paperboard before aqueous dispersions or extrusion polyethylene spreads across the wire side.
Caliper variation must remain under two percent across a jumbo reel to ensure uniform sealing during thermal activation.
Conversion Mechanics
Die cutting and rotary scoring process barrier coated boxboard without fracturing the outer polymer or mineral film. Glue wheel application demands corona discharge treatment on polyethylene grades because untreated surfaces reject cold emulsion adhesives entirely. Folding resistance increases when the barrier layer receives a partial score depth that respects the interior multi-ply structure.
Permeation Tolerance
Grease resistance testing follows dry indicator methods where turpentine droplet migration defines the maximum acceptable failure rate per batch. Water vapour transmission rates dictate maximum shelf life limits for hygroscopic contents packed inside sealed carton assemblies. Permeation failure occurs when pinhole defects in the mineral dispersion allow liquid ingress past the cellulose boundary.
