Functional Polymer
Aqueous dispersion applied to paper substrates inhibits the transfer of moisture vapour and grease through the sheet. A barrier coating restricts molecular migration across the converted surface without destroying the repulpability of the underlying cellulose matrix. Inline application stations on modern paper machines or off-machine gravure coaters deposit the liquid formulation onto the web before drying units set the film weight.
Exact control of coat weight determines the moisture vapour transmission rate achieved during converting runs. Substrates treated with this functional layer maintain mechanical folding endurance while providing high resistance to gas permeation under ambient conditions.
Surface Uniformity
Microscopic voids present in untreated paper fibres allow capillary action to draw liquids directly into the cellulose network. Calendering rolls flatten the initial base paper before application takes place to ensure an even film thickness across the entire web. High-speed cameras inspect the dried surface for pinholes that would otherwise compromise the integrity of the protective layer during downstream pouch formation.
Uneven distribution leads to localized failure points where grease or water vapour breaches the packaging material during shelf life tests. Converting mills measure contact angles to verify that the deposited polymer forms a continuous sheet rather than isolated droplets on the absorbent paper.
Migration Resistance
Food contact compliance requires that chemical components within the applied layer remain bound to the substrate under accelerated temperature conditions. Regulatory bodies evaluate total specific migration limits using solvent simulants that replicate fatty or acidic foodstuffs packed in the converted carton. Cross-linking agents added to the formulation anchor the polymer chains securely against swelling when exposed to high humidity inside sealed containers.
This chemical stability prevents off-flavours from transferring into sensitive products while preserving structural performance throughout distribution networks.
