Substrate Classification
Packaging boards manufactured from virgin softwoods without a bleaching step provide maximum structural integrity for heavy duty applications. Commonly designated as coated unbleached kraft CUK, this grade features a top layer of clay coating over a dark brown base to combine excellent printability with superior tear resistance. The brown fiber matrix retains its natural lignin structure to deliver high tensile strength under wet and dry conditions.
This combination of raw kraft strength and refined surface finish makes the board the standard choice for demanding retail environments where both branding and weight-bearing performance are required.
Strength Characteristic
Rigid cartons for beverage multi-packs depend on this board to survive the high moisture environments of refrigerated distribution chains. Because the chemical pulping of the softwood fibers preserves their length and bonding capacity, the board yields a high stiffness that prevents package bulging. This strength allows converters to reduce the overall basis weight of the carton without sacrificing structural safety.
Barrier Capability
Double-coating the outer surface with clay creates a smooth canvas for flexographic or offset lithography while protecting the fibers from moisture ingress. When the package is exposed to condensation, the barrier slows the migration of moisture into the raw fiber core. This protection ensures that the carton remains intact and upright during transit and display.
