Operational Geometry
Rotary anvil separation governs die-cutter clearance by establishing the exact mechanical gap between the steel cutting rule and the hardened anvil cylinder during paperboard conversion. Converters measure this distance in thousandths of an inch to prevent shearing the backing liner while cleanly severing the carton blank. Undersizing the gap crushes the corrugated fluting and weakens the structural integrity of the shipping container, whereas oversizing leaves uncut fibrous bridges that jam high-speed packaging lines.
Rotary flatbed and rotary cylinder presses require different calibration tables because rotational force deflects cylinders under load.
Caliper Adjustment
Board thickness dictates the mechanical offset applied during cylinder positioning. Operators calculate the required dimension by subtracting the desired score depth from the combined caliper of the linerboards and the internal fluting medium. Substrates containing high recycled content present variable density profiles that demand dynamic gap compensation throughout a production run.
Calibrated shims and hydraulic actuators adjust the bearing blocks to maintain uniform pressure across the entire web width.
Tolerance Verification
Production quality depends on verifying the spatial gap using lead-in test strips and pressure sensitive impression foil before feeding production stock. Excessive anvil wear alters the programmed geometry and forces operators to decrease the gap setting to compensate for surface deformation. Accurate setting of die-cutter clearance preserves the cutting rule edge and extends tooling lifespan across millions of continuous production cycles.
