Positioning Precision
Angular and pressure adjustments of a steel scraping strip against a rotating cylinder determine the thickness of the ink film left on the plate. This operational standard, known as doctor blade alignment, is critical for achieving a clean wipe and preventing printing defects. An improper setting can cause streaks or excessive wear of both the blade and the cylinder.
This process is necessary in rotogravure and flexographic printing systems where precise ink metering is essential for maintaining consistent color density.
Angle Optimization
The contact angle between the blade and the cylinder surface must be maintained within a specific range to ensure clean scraping. This parameter, which is critical to doctor blade alignment, ensures that ink is cleared from the non-image areas while remaining in the cells. When the angle is too shallow, the blade may lift, leading to ink leakage.
Conversely, an angle that is too steep will cause excessive friction and blade wear.
Wear Reduction
Uniform pressure across the entire width of the cylinder prevents uneven ink metering and localized wear. This pressure balance ensures that the blade does not flex or warp during high-speed production. A properly aligned blade lasts longer and protects the expensive chrome cylinder from scratching.
