Process Duration
Liquid absorption and chemical reactions on a moving paper web depend heavily on the duration of contact with the application equipment. The analysis of dwell time dynamics helps engineers predict how deeply a size press solution or coating formulation will penetrate the substrate. This knowledge prevents defects such as strike-through or poor surface strength.
Coating Application
Blade coaters apply a liquid mixture to the paper surface and then scrape away the excess within a fraction of a second. Under these conditions, dwell time dynamics dictate the thickness of the filter cake that forms on the paper surface before the blade removes the liquid. A longer dwell time allows more water to migrate into the sheet, which alters the rheological behaviour of the coating.
This alteration can lead to blade streaks and uneven binder distribution, compromising the final printability of the paperboard.
Operational Optimization
Paper machine speeds affect the duration of every process step from the headbox to the reel. Running at higher speeds reduces the time available for adhesive bonds to form or for heat to transfer during drying. To maintain product quality, operators must modify chemical dosages or adjust dryer temperatures to compensate for the accelerated dwell time dynamics.
